It is based on a Christian belief that the mystical life is not the result of extraordinary graces, but the normal development and perfection of the grace received by every Christian at Baptism. 

Spiritual direction is not advice given in a confessional, it is not psycho-therapeutic assistance with moral and family issues, analysis, coaching or pastoral counseling.
